Michael Djupstrom is a composer and pianist whose music has been commissioned by many major institutions (Philadelphia Orchestra Association, National Cherry Blossom Festival, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Friends of Chamber Music, Tanglewood Music Center) and has been presented and broadcast across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. He has received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, Romanian Cultural Institute, S&R Evermay Foundation, and many other organizations.

As a pianist, Djupstrom’s passion for chamber music has led to concerts for Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Brooklyn Art Song Society, the British Library, Hong Kong’s “Intimacy of Creativity” festival, and many other presenters worldwide. Djupstrom’s special interest in Romanian music resulted in performances at the George Enescu Festival of McGill University, a recital of contemporary Romanian and American works at the Meridian Festival in Bucharest, advanced Romanian language study through a Romanian government scholarship, and in the creation of a concert series in Minnesota focusing on this rarely-performed repertoire.

Djupstrom teaches chamber music at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; previously, he taught composition at the Curtis Institute of Music and theory and orchestration for Boston University. He received degrees from the University of Michigan and the Curtis Institute of Music and pursued further studies in Paris with Betsy Jolas, whom he later worked for as musical assistant.
