He studied at the Prague Conservatory with Karel Lang and František Xaver Thuri and then graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1982. He first joined the Czech Philharmonic as an English horn player and became the principal oboist in 1991.

He was one of the founding members of Ars Instrumentalis Pragensis in 1987 and has played dozens of concerts with the ensemble both in the Czech Republic and abroad. In 1996, they won the 1^stprize and gold medal at the International Competition of Chamber Ensembles in Osaka (Japan). In 1991, he co-founded the Czech Wind Harmony which focuses on the Czech music of the Classical period. He creates the dramaturgy for these two ensembles, composes numerous arrangements and does transcriptions.

As a soloist, he has performed with a number of Czech and foreign orchestras, including the Czech Philharmonic, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra St. Cecilia di Roma and Kamchatka Chamber Orchestra.

He played with Collegium Musicum Pragensee, Ars Rediviva and Slovak Chamber Orchestra. Between 2004 and 2014, he taught at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (Czech Republic). He recorded solo and chamber music for Supraphon, Panton, Rosa, Octavia Records, Multisonic, Czech Radio, Czech TV and others. In 2016, Czech composer Jaroslav Krček dedicated an oboe concerto to him but after Jiří Bělohlávek, then chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, died in 2017, the piece was never performed
