CHRISTOPH HENKEL

was born in Marburg and received his first cello lessons at the age of six.

In 1966, he won first prize at the national Jugend musiziert competition. From 1967 to 1969, he studied with Janos Starker at Indiana University (USA) on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In 1968, the Kulturkreis im Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie awarded him a scholarship. In the same year, he graduated from Indiana University with the Performer’s Certificate and was honored with the Enlow Young Artists Award.

In 1971, Christoph Henkel won first prize at the Young Concert Artists Competition in New York and was appointed to Illinois State University following his Artist Diploma. This was followed by three years as first solo cellist with the Symphony Orchestra of the Norddeutscher Radio (Hamburg) and the Hessischer Rundfunk (Frankfurt).

Christoph Henkel has held a professorship at the Freiburg University of Music since 1973.  He has held this position for almost 40 years with great commitment and outstanding success.  Countless of his students hold top positions in renowned European orchestras as well as cello professorships at European, Asian and American music academies.
His former pupil Jean-Guihen Queyras has also been chosen as the successor to Christoph Henkel’s cello professorship, thus continuing to guarantee excellent cello pedagogy at the Freiburg University of Music. A pedagogy that is characterized on the one hand by a sensitive and friendly approach to his students and on the other hand by stringency in the matter.

Numerous master classes and concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in Germany and abroad as well as radio, television and record productions round off his artistic activities.

CHRISTOPH HENKEL

 wurde in Marburg geboren und erhielt mit sechs Jahren den ersten Cellounterricht.

1966 wurde er erster Preisträger beim Bundeswettbewerb Jugend musiziert. Von 1967 bis 1969 studierte er als Stipendiat des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) bei Janos Starker an der Indiana University (USA). 1968 verlieh ihm der Kulturkreis im Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie ein Stipendium. Im gleichen Jahr absolvierte er die Indiana University mit dem Performer’s Certificate und wurde mit dem Enlow Young Artists Award ausgezeichnet.

1971 wurde Christoph Henkel erster Preisträger beim Young Concert Artists Wettbewerb in NewYork und nach seinem Artist Diplom an die Illinois State University berufen. Es folgten drei Jahre Orchestertätigkeit als erster Solocellist beim Sinfonischen Orchester des Norddeutschen

Rundfunks (Hamburg) und des Hessischen Rundfunks (Frankfurt). Seit 1973 hat Christoph Henkel eine Professur an der Hochschule für Musik Freiburg inne.  Letztere übt er nunmehr seit fast 40 Jahren mit größtem Engagement und herausragenden Erfolgen aus.  Unzählige seiner Schüler bekleiden die Spitzenpositionen in namhaften europäischen Orchestern sowie Celloprofessuren an europäischen, asiatischen und amerikanischen Musikhochschulen.    So ist auch sein früherer Schüler Jean-Guihen Queyras als Nachfolger auf Christoph Henkels Celloprofessur gewählt worden, und damit ist weiterhin für eine exzellente cellistische Pädagogik an der Freiburger Musikhochschule gesorgt. Eine Pädagogik, die einerseits charakterisiert ist durch einen sensibel-freundschaftlichen Umgang mit seinen Schülern und andererseits durch Stringenz in der Sache. 

Zahlreiche Meisterkurse und Konzerte als Solist und Kammermusiker im In- und Ausland sowie Rundfunk -, Fernseh – und Schallplattenproduktionen runden seine künstlerischen Tätigkeiten ab.
